I don't know if it's really called that, or if there's a central body of academic work or anything, but there is plenty of game design writing on what we find fun and why. DnD GM blogs, indie game post-mortems, Early Access devblogs, and there are plenty of dudes doing game design critique on youtube. If you're willing to sift through the shit some creative ideas come out of sourcemod forums, even if the posters don't really know how to phrase what they're getting at. I feel like here is where I link some good examples, but for the life of me I can't think of anything. There is writing on it out there, though.

Hi Everyone, I'm Salvatore. 28 years old, artist/philosopher/explorer type in the D/FW area. I'm a graphic designer and 2D pen-and-ink artist (salvatoreart.com), but my greatest passion is video games and video game development. I attended the Art Institute for a couple years pursuing a Game Art & Design degree, I'm currently developing a board game, and someday I hope to work on video games full time as an artist, designer, or all-in-one indie. I believe my purpose in life is to discover and speak the truth, and enlighten people through art, especially video games.

My video game playin' background is mostly FPS, RTS, Racing, and Flight Sim. And GTA. Always GTA. Predominantly PC.

I really love being on the cutting edge of new ideas, exploring and forging new territory. That's why this game intrigues me. Looks like a ton of fun and I can't wait to see what Justin does with the design. I've also never helped out with game development at this early stage in this way, so I'm interested to see how all this works. Just here to help out and have some fun!

Hello, most people refer to me as Coco. I'm working towards becoming a programmer, with gaming being one of my favourite things to do.

My spark for First Person Shooters was when I found a game called Ace of Spades. I started playing in the version 0.70 and found it to be really enjoyable, but then Jagex took over... the new game they released didn't feel right and didn't feel like AoS 0.70 at all. However, I later found Build and Shoot about March 2013 which hosted the classic versions of AoS. I then started to play the game religiously and found myself becoming pretty good at it. I carried on playing, finding myself getting involved with all events hosted by the community players and eventually competing in the leagues they ran, but that didn't last forever, and over the last few months the community felt as it was tearing apart so I decided to move on. The most important thing from that journey was that I experienced how close a community could be and to have met and gained so many amazing friends.

From there, I started to play Counter-Strike:Global Offensive. Another cool dude named "Eraaaaz" who also played AoS moved onto this game, and so I followed. This was a game I soon found myself loving! It was a lot harder to learn at first since I was not use to recoil or stopping when shooting because AoS was more about moving whilst being able to twitch aim to your enemies heads. I don't think I would be playing this game if it weren't for the enjoyment I had playing AoS.

Behind the scenes I also played a game called Realm of the Mad God, a flash game which is a mix between an mmo and a bullet hell rogue-like. After moving away from AoS I found myself spending more time on this game. As time went on I found a cool guy named "SuperachiX" who helped me along the way and we became very good friends and we still are to this day.

Achi played a game called osu! which I was very intrigued by, so I found myself playing that as well. It's a rythmn based game which revolves around clicking circles in time with the music. I love to play challenging games which is why I enjoyed the steep learning curve and probably another reason why I play CS:GO. Since osu! had a lot of Japanese players I was playing a lot of Japanese songs, this led to myself watching and enjoying anime. A lot of negativity is shown around this topic and after experiencing it, I'm not sure why.

Soon after, Achi gave up on osu! and decided to continue playing a game called Touhou, which is another bullet hell game but this time, with more bullets... More than I was used to just by playing RotMG. Once again I felt facinated and was drawn into it. This game is also very challenging and at this moment in time, I am currently trying to master this game as well.

I play a lot of TF2, recently got into Nosgoth

How is Nosgoth? I've watched some gameplay but haven't tried it myself -- seems to have some neat ideas.

It's pretty fun when everyone on both teams are on the same level. But due to the class based nature of the game a team can get screwed over by bad team compositions or just people playing their class wrong, which unfortunately is what happens 90% of the time. If it wasn't for that I'd recommend the game as it is really fun when you get a proper match.

It does have some really cool characters though, and it's rather neat how even though the main game type is TDM the dynamic between Vampires and Humans makes Humans the defenders and Vampires the attackers. Humans have to bunch up, watch each others backs and be wary of approaching Vampires while Vampires have to coordinate an attack as best as they can. Vampires have good mobility and utility while Humans have good consistent damage. There are a few places on maps that Humans always like to hang out but usually they have to move after an attack or two as the nearby health pick ups go on cooldown, unless a spot is really broken.

Although I haven't played the game for about a month now, waiting for the full release.

That description actually reminds me of Aliens VS Predator (2000). Was one of my favorite LAN party games -- we'd just play the demo and usually stick to aliens vs humans. Humans would group up with flamethrowers and the aliens would sneak around on walls and leap across the level.

Hi everyone -- I'm Ilses. I've been lurking for a while (...fourteen months? Yikes ) and the last update video finally made me decide to create an account.

Anyway, I also used to be a huge CSS player back in the day -- though admittedly, I usually played on the GzN WCS server, which could qualify as another game entirely. Nevertheless, it was glorious! I also played Osu! around the same time, but on the iTouch, which still runs it better than android (I could never get into the desktop game).
I played Gunz for a while (and later Gunz2) -- flying around on walls and animation-cancelling were tons of fun. Later still, I played Savage 2 for the really interesting mix of high skill-cap gameplay and team strategy, but the game slowly bled players and died off. My friends moved to Tribes Ascend following its' release, but we eventually left after new maps were introduced (the game just felt worse).
I've enjoyed playing Marvel vs. Capcom (3/Ultimate) and various Smash Bros. (especially Brawl Minus!). Early last year, I tried to get into CS:GO with some friends ($5 steam sale), but the game ran so poorly I was forced to drop it as unplayable . Since then, I've mostly quit windows gaming in favor of occasional bouts of TF2/L4D/Quake on my Linux machine.

...and that's the highly-condensed version . Outside of games, I mostly enjoy reading books and programming.

I've been following AoT for a while now, and can't wait for the public version to come out (being from Europe I don't hold much hope of getting in as a play tester, because of likely latency issues).
Video games wise, I've been playing Tribes Ascend for quite a while now, and would probably still be playing it if not for the terribad servers.
I can see there are a few AoS old timers here (hey TGM, Tank), I've been as well, really nice little game, built on an incredibly innovative engine, with an active community.
Other than that, I'm mostly an fps player, my favorite multiplayer games being by far the Unreal Tournaments from 99 and 2004. I'm also fond of story-based games like Deus Ex, FarCry 1, Avp or Bioshock, an I have a special place in my heart for Max Payne and his really bad luck at life. I also discovered Dark Souls only recently and its very "balanced and fair" pvp system (sarcasm).
Aside from video games, I enjoy reading (Moorcock, Pratchett, Asimov, Lovecraft, Buzzati, plus mostly everything science fiction) and movies (action packed ones).
About AoT, well I'm still lurking around, and can't wait for a public version

I'm JD. I'm new here. I just found out about Arms of Telos from my friend, Grandy.

So short history about my game life. Skip this paragraph if you don't care about a random guy online. All my life I was playing games only at other people's places. I played at friend's places for years. I only decided to start playing my own games when I first got given Minecraft by a friend when it came out of Alpha. Shortly after getting addicted to Minecraft, I found out about Ace of Spades. The Ace of Spades gameplay was impressive. One time, when I had a problem, I had to ask the IRC channel how to fix it. The community there was even more impressive. It was Grandy, I believe, who was one of the first guys to help fix my problem. Instantly I found the perfect place to hang out. Soon after, I became great online friends with everyone in IRC. I don't know how much they liked my annoying company, but I sure loved theirs. This was back in early 2011. I'm still good friends with nearly all of them. Hey Grandy, Serious Sim, Tank, CoCo. Hopefully this community will one day be as thriving as the Ace of Spades place once was.

Anyway, I played AoS for nearly two years up until the Jagex purchase. Then I played some Tribes 2 and Tribes:Ascend for a few months. Soon after that I started playing Dota 2 when it was released in beta. Then CS:GO after that. Since then, I've been playing Dota 2 and CS:GO continuously for the past couple years. Once in a while I take a break for the Humble Indie Bundles but the break usually doesn't last long.

This game looks like it has some very interesting gameplay up for grabs. I'm excited to see how the development goes. There's lots of potential. I'm a pretty competitive guy, so with both Ace of Spades and CS:GO I got into the competitive scene early. I hope, in the future, Arms of Telos can satisfy my competitive nature.

Using «Pumpelche» as my nickname since 1999, you might have seen me already in either Tribes 1, Tribes 2 or Tribes Ascend. And yes, I'm one of the older blokes, born 1974, married and father of two girls (6, 7).

FPS-Z games are my big passion, besides good RPG games like Skyrim, Dungeon crawlers like Dungeon Master and Grimrock or MMORPG like Guildwars 2 and The Elder Scrolls Online. I'm never playing to achieve competitive levels, but aim to please the people playing alongside or against me. Games are for fun and I want that all enjoy it.

Hobbies are of course my two girls & wife (...), motorcycling (recently Ducati Diavel) and Skating (Cross country skiing), Muay'Thai and some Triathlon - but rather as a gap filler and not that serious anymore.

When younger, I hung out with my Atari Mega ST 2 and used Omicron and GFA Basic to develop own Paint tools and Ultima IV like RPGs. Though, there's nothing left of these skills nowadays.

I'm looking forward to have some nice time here with people who are relaxed and nice and the opposit of Tribal War or 4chan. Coming from Switzerland, I'll try my best to join the test games whenever possible.

My name's Kahlil. I'm fairly paranoid about my personal information so I'll leave it at that.

I am generally found playing games or spinning pens, I have a steam called InevitableShenanigans and I play TF2, CS;GO (on occasion), Relic Hunters Zero, the Attack on Titan Tribute Game (which inspired my love of grapple hooks) and some other miscellaneous stuff.

My outlook on the gaming industry is pretty bleak so I was absolutely delighted to come across arms of telos in my crusade to find something good to play (despite being unable to play the game). I absolutely love games with a focus on movement or more specifically grapple hook functions which can allow me to fly like spiderman.

Hello. My name is Austin, and I'm a lamp.

I'm just a guy who likes surreal humor and puns, as well as good video games, good parody films, and good music, and tries to make each of the latter in his (my) spare time, although I don't usually finish any of them. I tend to be pretty harsh when criticizing things. The only games I really like are games that have extremely polished movement, as well as some interesting features to that movement. For example, Downwell was the first mobile game I've actually enjoyed, largely because it merged movement and shooting to one button, making it more interesting than most three-button games can manage. I have trouble finding any games I really enjoy in any genre because I'm so good at nitpicking- especially 2d platformers- but hopefully the multitude of interesting and unique FPS games (such as one about spiders with teleporters, bomb melee weapons, and grappling hooks going through zero gravity) in development will help alleviate that once I can actually play them.

I imagine that the movement, along with all of the other mechanics, will be something that is always improving and evolving over time -- even well after release. Movement has gone through endless iteration already, there are plans I have for future changes to movement, and I'm sure there'll be more changes after those are implemented and I'm able to analyze them.

Hello everyone. I am Fiddlebender.

Born in 1988, I have always played video games and the focus point has varied throught the years. As a kid it started with Alex Kidd (no pun intended) on Sega Master System 2 and quickly went onto the Mega Drive. I am still in love with the old 2D Sonic the Hedgehog games and enjoy some classics from time to time on either Sega or Nintendo consoles.
Streets of Rage, Super Mario Bros. 3, Landstalker, Duck Hunt, Mega Turrican, NHL 94 & 96 etc. Even had some rare moments of Amiga games at my friend's place.

Somewhere around late 90's I became more of a PC gamer (although we already had a Win95/98 Compaq at home when they were new and I had played games on DOS and Win 3.11 before, Wolfenstein, Commander Keen, Jetpack, just to name a few) but what I mostly ended up playing on PC was Icewind Dale.and that's where my handle is from (long live Interplay/Black Isle/Obsidian/InXile) and of course Age of Empires 2.

Later on, played some more FPS (I had barely played FPS at this point besides Doom and some not-so-successful Rainbow Six missions lol). During some classes when the teacher was absent at our vocational electronics school we used to play CS 1.5 and 1.6 even though Source was already out. I only ever played Q3A and Q3TA vs. bots since we didn't have a good internet connection back when those came out. Some MMORPGS... LotrO, Aion, Guild Wars 1&2, WoW, Age of Conan.

Jedi Academy on PC (glorious)

This. Jedi Academy or often called "JK3" became my #1 game in 2006 (along with Guild Wars) and I played it for a good few years until most of my clanmates and freinds from other clans had moved on. I was a pretty good duelist and I loved the lightsaber mechanics even if they were a little rough and not so polished. I am still hoping there will be a true successor to the series. If anyone cares I was in [E] under a different name "Anguirel" (have been using Fiddlebender for about 7+ years now) and I played with/against clans like [TAW], -[KR]-, (JAWA) and ->DP<-.

Early 2012 I started playing Tribes: Ascend during its beta phase but it feels like its time for me has worn out. Nowadays my attention is in many different games since FPS-Z is a new genre to me that opened up after T:A. I play a bit of Reflex but since my Quake roots are not that strong compared to most I'm having a hard time but it's fun and challenging. I also enjoy some good puzzles like Antichamber. Pillars of Eternity is still on pause lol, I just don't seem to have the time to sink into it after the initial 20 hours. What else... Rocket League, that game is great.

In conclusion, I have played numerous games and it seems vain to list them all so I won't. I favor games that have gameplay polished but can appreciate a good story and lore as well. Belgian and German beers are close to my heart as well, especially trappist beers. Motorcycles are fun too.

Hopefully I will see Arms of Telos develop into a great game that I will enjoy playing for a long time. So far, it's looking really good and I love the discussion I've read so far!

The Jedi Knight game I remember the most was the one where everybody online would use that move that stabs behind them for an insta-kill. Made battles look pretty funny. Neat games though -- surprised they haven't kept making them.

Hello, my name is Babafemi Olanrewaju Sandro Mark, but every one calls me Femi for obvious reasons. I am 17 and I mostly play Tee Worlds, Dwarf Fortress and Warframe. I play numerous other games on and off such as quake and tribes next. I prefer games with good and unique gameplay mechanics but i can enjoy a story driven game if it has passable mechanics and an engaging story. I eat, I drink, you know, all that human stuff.

It is hard to find an affordable mac with a good GPU, but I generally prefer OSX over Windows myself. I built a custom hackintosh so I could have a good GPU without shelling out for a Mac Pro. It's my main work machine and I rarely boot into windows
